DSM-5’le birlikte değişim gösteren kategorilerden biri de alkol madde kullanım bozuklukları olmuştur. Kötüye kullanım ve bağımlılık kavramları ortadan kalkmış, kullanım bozukluğu kategorisi oluşturulmuştur. Bu yeni sınıflama ve kriterlerin, yaygınlık araştırmalarını nasıl etkileyeceği merak uyandıran bir konudur.
