Abstract

Introduction: The study aims at detecting frequency of drug and alcohol abuse and its characteristics among convicted criminals.
Methods: The subjects were chosen from Istanbul Bayrampaşa Prison. 381 inmates were randomly assigned to the study and a sociodemogrophic form was filled unnamed by the subjects. Substance abuse and addiction were determined according to DSM IV criteria. Conclusion: The group were compised of only males and mean age was 32.5 year. Most of them were married with middle income and primary education background. They resisted in Marmara Region with large families and self-employed status.
The first imprisonment age was 26.35 year and they commenly committed to illegal drug dealing. More than half have had multiple imprisonment. Two third of the subjects had misused drug and alcohol before the imprisonment. The substances are alcohol, multiple drugs, cannabis, unidantified pills, cocain, eroin and volatile substances. The mean age for misuse was above 20 for heroin and cocain and below 20 for the rest. One third of the subjects were under the inflance of drugs when conmited a crime and half were addicted as they had withdrawal symptoms within the first week of imprisonment. One fifth of those who had withdrawal symptoms refered themselves to prison medical office and one fifth again have attended to a doctor for treatment before the conviction. The group which educational attainment and income is low, showed an inclination to commit crime. Therefore, that group should be targeted for research and education. The prison medical services should have drug treatment options and rehabilitation programmes.
